A few well known facts about the moon
- The moon is not a planet.
- The surface area of the moon is 14,658,000 square miles.
- It's roughly one-sixth the size of the Earth
- From earth you can see only about 60% of the moons surface
- The moon rotates at 10 miles per hour.
- The moons is about 4.6 billion years old.
- When a month has two full moons, the second full moon is called a blue moon.
- From Earth, we can only see one side of the moon.
- It is craters on the surface of the moon that create the image of the man in the moon.
- The moon is approximately 238,000 miles from Earth
- The moon has no global magnetic field.
- The moon has no atmosphere.
- About 49 moons would fit inside the Earth.
- The Moon’s first quarter is known as the "Waxing" moon.
- “Waxing” means growing. The new moon first appears in the sky as a tiny sliver of light that grows into a crescent. The waxing crescent moon curves to the left. It takes about a week for the first sliver of the new moon to grow into a crescent.
- The second quarter is the waxing gibbous Moon.
- Gibbous means humped. this refers to the shape of the crescent moon as it transforms from a half to a full moon.
- The third Quarter is The waning Moon
- “Waning” means shrinking. The Moon starts to get smaller "shrinking" from a full moon to a half moon.
- And the fourth and last quarter of the moons journey is the the waning crescent Moon.
- The waning crescent moon curves to the right as it slowly shrinks or transforms back into a new moon.
